Russia has a Looming AIDS Crisis

Despite all claims by the health ministry officials in Russia of the epidemic being in control, and the potentials of the Russian orthodox church to contain the epidemic, AIDS remains a battle that is being fought almost everywhere in the Russian homes, hospitals and churches. The crisis deepens as Russian President Vladimir Putin sponsors a conservative society with his socialist policies.

The truth remains that the HIV epidemic in Russia has plunged the state of affairs in Russia to a fresh nadir, with an estimate of it claiming yet another 2 million lives in the next five years. There are about 930,000 people in  Russia with the HIV virus running in their bloods. More than 192,000 of these are already in their graves.

Russia's  policies regarding sex-education in schools and the manner in which drug-treatment is meted out in Russia have come to the fore in this context. There has been a strict resistance to sex-education in schools. There has been on the use of methadone, a successful treatment of addiction to heroin. This comes despite the drug proving to be successful in de-addicting addicts. This may explain why the cases of HIV infection are on the rise in Russia, while other countries are claiming a victory on the infection.

The crisis began taking a form in the days of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. This was a time that saw a free flow of heroin into Russia through Afghan borders. Sex-workers and drug-addicts did the job of spreading the virus. It has spread all over the society now, with young women in Russia being seen as potential targets.
