Voters In Greece Vote For A ‘No’ To Austerity Measures

Greek voters did not let down the hopes of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras when he wanted them to vote for a 'no' in the referendum conducted to accept the austerity measures suggested by European nations or not. The suggestions included moves such as blocking pension funds of Greek citizens.

It was a landslide victory for the government when a majority of 60 per cent recorded a 'no' vote. Athens' Syntagma Square witnessed a lavish display of Greek flags held by government supporters who descended on the square to celebrate the victory.

Tsipras conveyed his thanks to the Greek public through an address released on the  television. The move is to bring Greece into a new era of reforms without any austerity measures. He considered the bailout offer from European nations in exchange for the austerity measures a 'blackmail'. He had played a gamble in this case. The vote for a 'no' had made him win over his fears. He was in a position to lay out his own terms and conditions for a better deal now.

European leaders were not so happy with the results of the referendum. A victory of  'no' by the Greeks had left them without the choice of supporting Greece in its moment of crisis. Greece faces a complete ejection from the countries that recognise the Euro as a common currency too in the wake of the current financial crisis.

Financial officials in Europe are of the view that the result of the referendum had brought down all hopes of a pact between Greece and other European countries.
