What US states permit the growing and use of marijuana?

In the US, 23 states and the District of Columbia currently permit the growing and use of marijuana to a certain degree. The recreational use is now legalized in4 states and the District of Columbia. In the State of Alaska, adults who are 21 years old or older are now allowed to transport, purchase, and carry up to one ounce of marijuana and six plants.

As of July, 2015, by vote, Oregon allows adults to be in possession of one ounce of marijuana in public and are also allowed to possess 8 ounces of marijuana in their homes. Washington and Colorado passed very similar laws in 2012. There are many States that have decriminalized the act of marijuana possession either on a person or in a person’s home. However, the legalized amounts of marijuana are very small. Larger amounts are subject to jurisdiction and strict action will be taken against the people who possess marijuana in amounts larger than permitted. Very recently, the State of Delaware passed a law which decriminalizes personal use of up to one ounce and placed civil fines instead of penalties.

There are medical laws that surround the use of marijuana; some laws are broader than others. These laws relating medical marijuana vary from state to state. Some states also permit the use and possession of marijuana oil, if used for medical purposes only. The use of marijuana oil, and the possession up to 20 ounces was legalized very recently in Georgia. Here is a map that shows which States permit the use of marijuana.
